WIPs & Books* in Shades of Green

As an antidote to current affairs, in January I committed to practice of (short) daily meditations, art, and journal writing ('Morning Pages', if you've read The Artist's Way) and have managed it for almost every day of January - I even gave myself permission to not be a perfectionist about the days it couldn't be done. It's certainly helped with my intention for 2017 which is 'lightening up' and having more fun. Especially the art. Abstract painting, using different colours, trying different supplies, not being attached to the outcome - it's all very good for the soul.

Work In Progress (WIP): First layer of the week 5 abstract art exercise in Life Book 2017, class by Wendy Brightbill.

As for the 'lightening up' - that's taken on a bit of a life of its own. When I wrote about listening to the whispers, I had no idea where they would lead. For starters I spotted the book Light is the New Black by Rebecca Campbell. Playfully known as the 'Ninja Assassin' for my love of black, the title made me chuckle and I couldn't resist reading it. From there, I moved on to a series of great books from Hay House, including The Map and Uncharted by Colette Baron-Reid (I'm working my way through the exercises, having read them both once) and now I'm reading Rise Sister Rise by Rebecca Campbell. I'll add reviews of all of these books to Goodreads when I've 'finished' working with them (spoiler: I love them and they are not really the sorts of books you're ever really finished with. I suspect they will have a permanent home on my bedside table).

Shawl of Secrets is home... and needs a matching hat!

I wasn't sure whether the cover of  RSR was responsible for my 'shades of green' abstract art, or whether that was to do with the return of my Shawl of Secrets sample which includes a lot of greens and blues. Either way, I am in the planning stages of TWO new knitting projects - one is a secret (new yarn!!!) which includes a delicious teal, and I'm contemplating which pattern to use to cast on a simple hat with Secret Garden, so that it matches my shawl. I'm inclined to use the Herb Garden colourway which is the one that's mostly shades of green. Out of interest, I looked up the symbolic meaning of the colour (here) and it seems fitting that I should be drawn to it now:
This is the color of balance and harmony. From a color psychology perspective, it is the great balancer of the heart and the emotions, creating equilibrium between the head and the heart. From a meaning of colors perspective, green is also the color of growth, the color of spring, of renewal and rebirth. It renews and restores depleted energy. It is the sanctuary away from the stresses of modern living, restoring us back to a sense of well being. This is why there is so much of this relaxing color on the earth, and why we need to keep it that way. Green is an emotionally positive color, giving us the ability to love and nurture ourselves and others unconditionally.
Do you find yourself drawn to certain colours at particular times? Do you intentionally pick colours to match your mood, or does it ever happen unconsciously? Leave a comment or get in touch on social media to let me know.

Postscript: On the subject of Shawl of Secrets, I'm delighted to hear such lovely feedback about the pattern, and to see how many of you are enjoying making it, or have already finished. There are not many projects on the Ravelry gallery yet, but if you use the hastag #shawlofsecrets on Instagram, you'll see them popping up! Don't forget to add the tag if you make one and post photos too.

*WIPs & Books is a casual update about things I'm making and reading. WIPs = works in progress.

  1. Beautiful colours. Green, the greeny blues and red are my go to colours. Except that I wear black pretty much 24/7!!! X

    1. Yep, my wardrobe is filled with black, and just the odd smattering of grey or black and white stripes, but I do love red too. (For the car, front door etc!) x

  2. Greens are my go-to's (I blame the hair colour, and the fact that green comes in so many wonderful shades, it's just 'nature' to me). I'm also an 'autumn' type, so 'burned' colours also do it for me. Yes, and teal... but I don't have to explain that to you!

  3. I like all colors. Can't say there are different in which mood I am. I see a skein and know if I love it. I don't recall there has been a skein I didn't like LOL
So I'm a all round color girl ;-)
