Postcard from... the Netherlands

Our Maker's Postcard today comes from a yarn and textile designer who generally prefers to be behind-the-scenes in her studio in the Netherlands, so I was especially pleased when Simy Somer offered to show us what inspires her about working there.

I spend a lot of time in the studio, working on new yarns, new products and new designs. I'm a pretty focussed designer and when in the throws of creating, I can get so caught up in what I'm doing I rarely look up. But luckily, I'm fortunate to have a very large window in the studio that constantly encourages me to look up, breathe and take in the scenery.

Here in the Netherlands we enjoy all the seasons to the full, warm summers (most of the time), springs filled with tulips and flowers, colourful autumns and winters with ice, frost and snow. The view from my window is a constant source of inspiration. I'm often working on colour ways and colour combinations for new yarns, the studio window is often the place I turn to when I need an injection of inspiration.

Evening sunsets, hazy summer days and ice-skating on the canals are all framed for my enjoyment and constantly changing. The sight of windmills slowly turning in the distance, cows walking in their lines to be milked and boats drifting past are common sights.

Colour is probably my biggest inspiration and my single studio window offers no end of it.

You are always welcome to drop by over at my blog and see what's inspiring me at the moment, Simy.

  1. I have so much admiration and respect for Simy, and NO idea at all how she manages to find the extra hours in the day to do all that she does.
