I've had various hobbies over the years (some might call them obsessions) and whether it has been knitting, baby wearing, or handbag shopping, there seems to be a common theme amongst the people I have met who share these interests. I think it's best summarised in this visual, where x = the thing you love:
The overlap is the bit that "other people" (muggles) know about. For example, most people know that I knit - they see me knit - but they really have no idea of the extent of my hobby. Most won't know that I blog about it, read books and listen to podcasts about it and that I have a stash of yarns I mostly bought because they are pretty... and because one day I'll turn them into something.
For knitting/crochet bloggers, I suspect it's possible to take this one step further:
*'Ravelry' can be swapped for any other hobby-specific forum. |
Note: If your husband doesn't read your blog, then the last two can be reversed.
I don't think this is a female thing, especially if D's stash of movies, games and gadgets is anything to go by. Without a salary of my own, there is not much I can get past him so my personal expertise is perhaps in justifying the need for certain things and as he is an obsessive personality too, he seems to be fairly understanding.
How about you - can you relate to this? Are you a secret stasher?
Nope. I'm a in your face stasher...and the Hubs he is a contributor...he calls my stash..my retirement fund...
ReplyDeleteWow - lucky you!!!! :D
DeleteI'm with you all the way, although I think I would need to add another circle between the whole truth and what's on Ravelry - The stash that I let myself believe I have.
ReplyDeleteI don't ever dare put it all in one room because then I'd have to face up to my hoarding tendencies!
That's such a good amendment! :D
DeleteI just showed my hubby your post. He just shouted YES! at it. Apparently you are correct ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm not ashamed.
Brilliant!
DeleteIt's simple: my money - my yarn - my whatever. And my husband doesn't care. I'm lucky. :-)
ReplyDeleteYou are lucky :)
DeleteI'm right there with you. Sometimes my car holds part of my stash until I can secretly bring it in and "hide" it. :)
ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh out loud. My husband also thought it was very funny :D
DeleteMy husband literally laughed out loud at that and nodded throughout the entire belly chuckle.
ReplyDeleteHa! I'm now wondering if he also has a hobby/ obsession?
DeleteHe used to have a stash of games (and consoles) but he managed to quit his obsession because he felt it was taking up too much of his time and he wanted to write instead.
DeleteThis is the best blog post I've seen in a good while! I know exactlyyy what you're talking about. I have to have my stash spread around in different baskets and containers so it doesn't look so gigantic. I don't have a craft room so I have to have it all in our front room somewhere.. My hubby doesn't quite understand my reasoning behind buying it all but I think it's a very good thing he doesn't realise quite how expensive some of it is! Ashley xx
ReplyDeleteI have such an amusing image in my head now :)
DeleteI think my OH knows that I have lots of yarn, after all he can see all the storage boxes, but if it was all taken out of the boxes and put in a pile, I think he might wonder where it all came from. I'm not hiding it, but I'm not making him look at it either, and I think that is best for both of us!
ReplyDeleteThis seems a most sensible approach! :)
DeleteMy husband knows about my true stash, he helped me move it all when it outgrew its home. In fact he aids and abets in stash procurement, driving me to new yarn stores, checking out sales and all. In fact he offers me yarn sprees on down days to cheer me up :) He has his shed and what goes on in there I do not ask or care lol
ReplyDeleteWell that sounds like a great situation - there is no way that D would take me to yarn shops, but I have tried to persuade him that a trip to the Wollemeise shop might be fun as it'll involve a weekend away.
DeleteMy stash of yarn is kept inside my stash of handbags.x hubby doesn't know how much I've got, best that way, although I have no income of my 'own' he effectively had a rather large amount of yarn to his name! Tee hee hee
ReplyDeleteI can't do this since my husband's the CFO. Although he's always surprised at how much yarn I have in storage.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty pleased to have cunning boyfriend - he's always keen to see new stash as it comes into the house ;)
ReplyDeleteThankfully my fiancé knows about my stash, or has acknowledge what I buy then forgets I have it...so he probably can't remember the actual extent of my stash unless I was to pull it out in front of him :)
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha ha, this made me chuckle. My husband knows about my stash, lovely readers know about my stash, the rest of the world Does Not Need To Know.
