I went shopping today (urgh!) and noticed lots of Christmas knits, and in fact lots of knitted things in general - everything from cushions to faux cable candle holders. It got me thinking about novelty knitwear and I realised we don't have any in our house. It's not something I'd be likely to knit - the effort that goes into producing a sweater means I wouldn't want to limit it's use to such a small part of the year - and I don't tend to buy knitted clothing.... but part of me would secretly quite like to have a proper full-on Christmas jumper. How about you?
(PS "The Knitter" in the cartoon is inspired my mum. She has watched that film a MILLION times. I wonder why?!?!)
If Colin Firth comes over count me in! I did buy a reindeer cardi this year and I love it.

A reindeer cardi!?! We need pics! :D
DeleteI'll tweet you one now x
DeleteI really love it. I need to get to Primark!
DeleteI used to hate Christmas jumpers until I started knitting myself and now I admire the time and effort that obviously went into them. I got an email the other day from fab with this top (http://eu.fab.com/sale/3453/product/86286/?usid=9) and I really want it, but being a knitter I can't bring myself to buy knitted things, I HAVE to make them.
ReplyDeleteThat's so cute! I think my opinion on all handmade things has changed since I've been making too. I used to look at a handmade fair isle jumper and think HOW MUCH?!? but now I see a £150+ price tag and think it's not very much at all per hour, plus the yarn!
DeleteHi, neighbour!
ReplyDeleteWell you know me- I have bought my first piece of novelty knitwear - my Santa jumper! (a cheap and cheerful Primark special)
I think it's quite fun - the kids love it too!
Xxx
I love your jumper! It's totally your fault that I spotted so many today - you know, it's like when you get a green car and then every car is green!?!
DeleteThanks for popping over - it's nice to see you here :)

I have to say that for the first time this year I bought myself a cheap and cheerful Christmas reindeer jumper. The deciding factor was that it was the same as one Amy Pond wore in the Dr Who Christmas special a couple of years ago, I'm so sad.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely feel I am missing out now!!! I need reindeer too :D
DeleteI would love to have such a sweater. I dont know why, but I like them. However, I do not have the patience to do such a long project. So no sweater for me.
ReplyDeleteI like them too! Maybe one day...
DeleteI don't have any novelty knitwear but I was inspired by my brother about 5 years ago when he and his wife produced their own sort of charity Christmas card; they trawled local charity shops for all the cheesiest knitwear and found a nasty blue tinsel tree along the way. Then they struck catalogue model poses in the knitwear, in front of the tree, deadly serious in all their finery, and made prints for the relatives' Xmas gifts! I've had a sly hankering for my own novelty roll neck coatigan ever since.
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious!!!! I'd love to see some of those pics!!!!!
DeleteNo, I don't. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm shocked Regula, knowing your lovely use of colour I really thought you would have some! xxx
DeleteOoooo Christmas jumpers are very in this year! Not sure i would buy one myself and my knitting skills are not up to making one for sure
ReplyDeleteIt's such a lot of work for a couple of weeks wear, isn't it.
DeleteIt depends what you mean. I live in Baltimore USA and many women have them on complete with all sorts of lurid embroidery, bells and flashing lights. They look terrible let me tell you but I would love a pattern for a tasteful one if such a thing exists!! http://mommyhasaheadache.blogspot.com/2010/09/tribal-wives-christmas-sweater-set.html
ReplyDeleteThat post really made me laugh! Thanks for posting your link :D
DeleteWe tend to do Christmas t-shirts over here as its wayyy to hot for sweater. Regardless, I think Im on the nay side!
ReplyDeleteI've always thought nay too.... until recently! :D
DeleteWhy not do something like Boreal by Kate Davies (can't seem to add rav link, sorry) with the right accessories it could be a Christmas jumper, and the rest of the year,it's just a gorgeous top!
ReplyDeleteOh I LOVE that pattern - thanks for that. It's so nice - have just added it on Ravelry! :)
DeleteMmm, I'd go more for hand-knit, Christmas ornaments.
