(U)FO Friday..... and the tricky issue of yarn storage

Source: nataliedee.com
So yesterday I decided it was time to sort and clean the Cwtch. YIKES! I had no idea I'd amassed so much yarn - some for projects to come and some left over from my growing list of Finished Objects. In the grand scheme of things it's not really a "stash" but it's more than I have space for in the meagre drawers beneath the coffee table. (I also hadn't realised how many UNfinished Objects are squirrelled away, but that's for another post!)

My friend Lee and I were talking about yarn storage last week which lead me to Pinterest where I found a few ideas, including these:

My Cwtch is a very small room on the ground floor of our house - in other houses with this layout it's the Study (it's the perfect size for a study) but we didn't need one as D has an Edit Suite upstairs so I managed to squeeze in a small sofa and a rather large armchair as well as a table and shelves to make it my own little space. This leaves very little opportunity to add further storage, so my next job is to sort the shelves and drawers I already have and attempt to house the yarn that is currently hidden in bags behind the sofa and then I'll see just how much extra space I need. I'd love to know how you store your yarn and craft supplies - please leave a comment.

I'll be back on Sunday with the first of my 2nd Year of Projects posts,
in the meantime pop to Tami's for some finished projects.

  1. All of my yarn is stuffed into a bookcase in the living room. I know I don't have room for any more, so it keeps me from buying too much!

    1. This is certainly one of the reasons I try not to buy anything I'm not going to use imminently!

  2. I would love to have a room just for me. Even just a wee room (as in little not the toilet)! I dream of pretty storage and lovely yarns displayed but alas I fear I am the lady at the top of the page.

  3. I dream of the day I can have a cwtch of my own (and I think I shall adopt that as its name - even if my mum is convinced it should be pronounced sea-witch!)

My yarn is currently stored in 2 4-drawer plastic things. Not very lovely, but it keeps it mostly corralled. I want pretty yarn storage too!

    1. Oh yes - you need a Cwtch! I laughed out loud at sea-witch! Tell your mum it rhymes with Butch! :)

  4. Shop yarn is upstairs in the yarn room, of course! My own personal stash is teeny (in comparison to many) and is stored in 1 of the ikea boxes, identical to the red ones in the picture.

  5. I don't have a huge stash, but what I do have is mainly displayed on shelves and an old cd rack in my craft room/dining room. You can see pictures here: http://missmagpiemakes.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/craft-room-tour.html

What I consider to be my embarrassing stash (old neon acrylic and weird fluffy yarns my daughter convinced me to buy to make something for her with) are stuffed into an old work basket and tucked behind the door.

  6. I have a 3 tray plastic trolley in the cupboard under our stairs. I only sort it once a year because it takes forever. I wish it could look as lovely and organised as your pinterest suggestions.

    1. If I had something so pretty and organised I'm sure it would result in purchasing more :)

  7. My yarn has to live in the garage, as we're rennovating and there's no way I'm letting it near the sawdust! I have an old-fashioned bureau with drawers full of my nice stuff, then a couple of large carrier bags with cheaper or sweater-quantities in. My dream is to one day have proper space for it - that first picture is just stunning! After all, stash is for looking at as much as for knitting from, right?

Please tell me that's right. Because then my supplies can be decor as well, which makes them easier to justify ;)

    1. Of course! Although I can't help thinking that dust will accumulate on open displays...? Mine are currently in plastic bags in the drawers and bags for this reason.

  8. Mine is in the big storage footstool in the lounge - out of sight from J who likes to do the andrex puppy thing when he gets his hands on it, lol. It will soon be full though so I'm on the lookout for ideas too :-)

    1. That is funny - because it's not my stash or child - then it would not be funny at all :D

  9. Those storage ideas are fantastic. I however have to share my waredrobe in my bedroom with my yarn stash, so I am limited to either how much clothes space I have or stash space. Which is another reason why I am busy knitting through my stash.

    1. That's perfect - you can just turn your stash into clothes, solving both issues :)

  10. Mine is a rather unglamorous, but VERY handy wire shelving unit...a double one of this:http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S19876454/ from ikea. Its arranged by weight and the best, if not the prettiest way to organise it all.

  11. We have no room at all - my hubby workd from home and most of the house is taken up with his work related stock! However, I have some plastic crates in the loft with some wool well wrapped up, and a couple of crates in our bedroom with wool sorted into colours, packed in plasic bags. Of course, my ongoing project wool (and a little more) is in a wonderfully bright canalware bucket next to my armchair in the sitting room, just waiting for me to dig in! love all the ideas suggested so far, and so so would like my own little cwtch - maybe one day!! 12. I have an old cabinet that belonged to my grandmother (it was her television stand). Currently I can no longer get the door to close, so I really need to either knit something with some of the larger quantities or just stop buying yarn. My fiance and I are getting an apartment together next month and he called a corner of the bedroom my "yarn area", but I am fairly certain that no more than a cabinet will fit there. Good luck with your organization!

  13. These are great ideas for storage solutions. I think my partner has a growing phobia for the house being overtaken by yarn, WIPs & crafting tools, and that maybe one day he'll not be able to get through the door. So, with that in mind, I try to keep my stash small-ish and squirrel it away where possible. If I have a particularly yummy looking skein, I have to display it in the lounge for a few weeks though. I don't see it as clutter ... I think it's beautiful. Tanya x

  14. My yarn stash is here, there and everywhere at the moment.
Once the house is finished (yeah right!) I will have a craft room. I think one of the old blanket boxes will be mine and that will be the perfect stash storage space I think. Build starts early August we hope so maybe by December I may have an organised stash!
    A girl can dream eh!

  15. I'm just going through the same process - I've already managed to take stock of the heaps of yarn cluttering almost every flat surface and herd them together in one spot.
I'd love to sort it and make it easily available, but (owing to the fact I live in a 1-room appartment) I'll have to make some considerations. I'll probably go for the option: How will it take up the least space so I can fit it all onto one shelf in the cabinet?
Good luck to you - and wish me luck, too!

  16. According to the photos, the half-balls are actually really cool decoration. You inspired me with this post - I will definitely try this at home :)

  18. My yarn is stored in card board boxes in the attic as I only have had a small room of my own after we moved into this house. The plan is to put the yarn in transparent boxes from IKEA like in your second picture. Only my shelf is black and in the tiny tv room. Summer vacation is coming soon ...

The vision is to make a studio in the attic. ;-)

  19. Seriously! You want to know where I store my yarn? ALL over the house. Although I have been good recently and listed some on Ravelry, before storing them in Ikea baggies in one of our many cupboards.

  20. Mine's in a plastic drawer thingy and a Trofast (although there is fabric in there too) and there are probably bags here and there too *oops*

  21. My way is NO way pretty like that. I use big, plastic bins. I worry about moths. One knitter I know found moths in her yarn and had to throw lots away - eek!

  22. Thanks for sharing these great Pins! My stash is in ugly plastic tubs, but now I can aspire to having beautiful storage!

  23. I have the same problem, but it's a good problem, right? Stay cool!

  24. Mine was relocated to it's own Ikea Expedit unit last year. I'd love to have it on display but with all our cats and their yarn snobbery taste in only my nicest yarn it's safer hidden away! I'm actually planning on relocating all my craft stuff down to the summer house at the bottom of the garden at some point in an attempt to create a bit of a haven for myself!
