Knitalong Update: Almost a ta-dah!

Hello and a happy Tuesday to you all from an overcast and puddle-ridden West Sussex! It's good to be back after a weekend of celebrations - we had two family birthdays plus my sister visited for the first time in several months - so it's been busy here since Friday (and is why I didn't post for the last few days of Knitting & Crochet Blog Week). Due to the full house I didn't get much knitting done until Sunday when I was up at 6am determinedly knitting the border of the Knitalong Shawl. I picked it up at EVERY chance that day and by 22:30 had finished casting off. (Those rows seemed never-ending!)

You'd like to see it...?
For scale: the red thing at the top is a 6" (15cm) ruler
...yes, it's still blocking at the moment but I do have some sneak pictures for you, taken yesterday morning before the ends were sewn in and when my model was still in her PJs.

YARN: Nimu Yarns Silk/Cashmere 4ply (Special Purchase)  - NEEDLES: 4mm

If you haven't seen them, there are already a few other completed shawls (here... and here?) and there is a link over at Natalie's blog where you can add your progress too. Natalie's shawl is looking gorgeous - she is still wading through her border rows - I feel her pain!

Despite those last few long rows, this pattern is absolutely superb. The problem I've always had with my beloved and much worn Boneyard Shawl is that when I flick one end (nonchalantly) across my front, the point ends up down my arm. The SSS solves this issue perfectly and for this reason I just know there will be more of these to come. Which I suppose leads me onto a Twitter conversation I had with some lovely friends yesterday.

Here are the links mentioned:  Colour Affection  and the most stunning whippoorwill

So I'm putting forward these two patterns: Colour Affection and Whippoorwill and if you'd like to join in, please vote for the one you'd like to make using the poll at the top of the right side-bar. The poll runs for the next 3 weeks so we'll have time to choose the yarn, get the pattern, etc before the beginning of June. (If you're reading this on a mobile device and can't see the poll, simply scroll to the bottom of your page and click "view web version". If you're using a feed reader, click on the title of this post which should take you to the original webpage.)

I can't wait to see all the other shawls - please don't be shy! Feel free to link in the comments here, and to tag your pics on Instagram or Twitter using #SSSKnitalong. You can also use the CftC Facebook page to post your pics if you don't have a blog or use Instagram or Twitter.

  1. It's looking so lovely. I like the Colour Affection but for me the Whippoorwill that has the edge because I like the idea of being able to tie it.
You must tell me how you did that clever screen copy thing!

    1. I'm thinking of a large one to tie as well. As for the pic, it's just a print screen - I use a mac so it's cmd+shift+4 and select the area you want to take a pic of.

    3. Ok, so on a laptop using windows - use this link for instructions http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/take-a-screen-capture-print-screen

from an iphone, hold down the front button and the on/off button at the same time to take a pic of whatever's on your screen :)

  2. Your shawl looks great on your "model". makes me think I might want to make one for a little girl to keep her warm and toasty on cool nights when she doesn't wear a coat (I have boys but their little friend is always without a coat on)

    1. It is a fabulous size on a little one - and that's before blocking, it's even bigger now! :)

  3. The shawl looks fab, I am about halfway through the border, but to be honest I think I may well cast off now, as I'm not keen on a big block of that colour (variegated) yarn at the edge.....hhhmmmmm, not sure now I've seen yours, the wide border does look good......that's the only problem with this is that you can't really get a clear picture of what it looks like while mid process.

I went to wonder wool on Saturday and have bought the yarn for the colour affection, but I think as soon as the stripe is off, I will start the next.....I like the other rainbow one, very pretty!

  10. Hi
I'd do the whippoorwill with you although it's my first shawl so I hope it'll be easy enough. Any ideas on where to get the yarn? I like the look of 'Bugga' but I can't see who is currently retailing it.

    1. I don't know that yarn - have you googled it?

I have the whippoorwill pattern already and it's very detailed and well-written :)

  12. Hi Sarah, so glad i found your blog today! I was on Ravelry looking for some help with my SS Shawl. :) I'm actually doing one too - but not as a part of a knitalong - and I have a question. I'm on the 11th stripe, and it is looking nowhere near big enough! My gauge is what the pattern recommends. I'm assuming it will be a lot bigger after blocking? I need some reassurance! :) http://www.ravelry.com/projects/applecake33/stripe-study-shawl
