Flitting, and a plea for help - WIP Wednesday/Yarn Along

Last night I had a bit of a knitting frenzy and finished off the Bella Wrap (I'll blog it on Friday when it's blocked) then unravelled the Pogona I had cast on and abandoned in one evening, and even got on with the socks I started way back before my surgery 2 months ago.

I turned the heel of the first sock this afternoon while we were at my Mum's so this little project will be staying in my handbag - it's been ages since I've carried a "handbag project" so I think that's a good sign that I'm getting my groove back.
Despite various things in my huge WIP basket, I'm keen to get on with something new and would love your opinions on the Pogona. The reason I have now ripped it out TWICE is that the YO holes look different on each side of the shawl - on one side the holes are large and open and on the other they are much smaller. If only I'd kept a photo.

I can only think the difference is because one set of holes is from the purl side and one from the knit side, but no matter what I do, I can't get them to look the same. I've carefully made all the YOs "correctly" according to all online tutes I can find, I've asked my Mum to watch me and she says I'm doing them all right. I've tried twisting the stitches on the knit side to make them look the same, and I've asked a few other people I know who have made this, but still have no satisfactory answer other than a few "no one will notice when it's blocked". I'm no stranger to bodging as you know, but I'm not happy to bodge this one - the sides (which will eventually form the straight edge) look different, and that will not do. If you can make any suggestions or have any answers to this dilemma please do leave a comment. I may move onto the Stripe Study Shawl by Veera Valimaki instead, the delicious yarn is waiting on that one and it may be good for the Spring and cooler summer evenings... decisions, decisions!

Last Wednesday I'd started reading Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart, but the Kindle Spring Sale has been distracting me and I made the mistake of reading the first few pages of The Farseer Trilogy (1) - Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb which now has my interest. I also need to read Me Before You by Jojo Moyes before Book Club in a couple of weeks... so many books, so little time!

So you see I'm flitting between projects and books this week with a rush of enthusiasm but little staying power. I'll let you know how it all goes. In the meantime, check out other WIPs and books at Tami's and Ginny's blogs.

  1. I wish I had an answer to the yarn over question - the yarn overs either side of my yoke detail on the jumper I'm making are slightly different sizes too. I don't know if it has something to do with the cable in between them, but I'm crossing my fingers that blocking does fix it (I didn't notice until it was too late!)

Cast on the shawl, and I will too ;)

  2. You'll have to just trust me but, once you block it, the yo holes do even out and more so as you wear it.
I just had a good look at one of mine to compare with the one I'm making at the moment. On the WIP, the holes look terrible but there's no way around this.

    1. Thanks Claire, I know it will look so much better blocked, but can't help thinking there must be a better way to make the holes more even - they are so different.

  3. I'm really sorry about your knitting I cannot help as I cannot knit :-( I do hope you get sorted with it soon.

  4. Wow, that sounds frustrating. I have no real answers about the YO problem - I'd have to see it to understand.

    1. I should have taken photos - actually I may have posted one on my FB ages ago - I'll have a look.

  5. That's serious knitting mojo right there! Sorry that I'm no help on the YOs - but I can suggest another cool Veera Valimaki pattern if you're interested. Her Color Affection shawl is just gorgeous - lots of squishy garter stitch, together with color stripes - fun!

  6. I love having a handbag project. I feel a little lost without one... Never know when I might have a free minute to pull it out ad knit a bit.

    1. I always did until I was in hospital and then I had a couple of weeks where I didn't feel up to knitting at all - I'm sure it's a good sign.

    1. It just makes sense to me to do them this way, next I'm going to have to try 2 at a time :)

  8. I wish I could help, but without watching you do the YO's I can't say why they look different. Maybe cast it on again and do a video?

I love the colour of your socks, I can't wait to see those finished :) I look forward to Friday to see your Bella Wrap too :)

  9. I think you'll like the Farseer Trilogy. Its a good one! I'm having some shawl struggles myself. Let us know what you find out about the YO for the Pagoda. I have that on my favorites, so I'd love to hear what you find out.

  10. I love the Farseer trilogy! The Kindle sale caught my eye this morning too, lol. I got a sample of another of Robin Hobbs books, which I'm almost guaranteed to end up buying - and that wasn't the only one. I hope you can figure something out for your yarn overs, the socks are looking great though!

    1. Maybe I'll knit a swatch and block it to see if I'm happy. That might be a good idea.

  12. Mayhap blocking be the key to symmetry?

  13. Just found my way over here from Ginny's Yarn Along ... hello :D

I think I might know what your YO problem is and how to rectify it, but I don't have a copy of the Pogona pattern to check to see if I'm right. Basically though if one YO is worked K YO P and the other P YO K, the former is taking in a lot more yarn than the latter - most knitters bring the yarn forwards under the needle after the K, then work the YO bringing the yarn back under the needle to work the P - thus making a bigger hole. To reduce the amount of yarn used for that K YO P work the K, bring the yarn to the front over the top of the needle, and now work the P. On the following row you will then need to work into the back of this altered stitch to avoid twisting it. Do this and you will have used a similar amount of yarn to the P YO K and so the YO holes will be of similar sizes. Hope this helps :D

    1. Annie, I think I love you!!!! You have understood EXACTLY what the problem is. When I cast this on again I will try your solution and let you know. Thank you SO much!
