As I've already mentioned, the Beekeeper's Quilt bug has bitten here - or should I say 'stung'? Either way, I'm very excited about these little puffs of smooshy goodness - and so are the kids as they are "borrowing" them faster than I can knit them! After starting properly yesterday I'm just about to complete 'hexipuff' number six.
Here are the first five along with the beautiful Hexibag I managed to get my hands on from Marianne at Picperfec's Fluff-n-Stuff which she designed for mobile hexipuffing! It has perfect pockets for needles and notions, stuffing, it's shaped like a hexagon, has mismatched buttons and even has a little wrist strap for knitting whilst standing up - she seems to have thought of EVERYTHING!
The 'puffs are made from a few different yarns - I have only a few genuine scraps (the purple is Nimu Torva which I pinched from my mother) so the others I've had to buy, noted here for future reference.
The bright pink and pale variegated puffs are made from Patons Fairytale Dreamtime 4ply Pure Wool and are lovely - very soft - but my favourite has to be the one made from Regia Extra Twist Merino - it's the softest most lovely thing ever - I am sure there will be many more made from this yarn before I'm done (and there are several other colours available). I also bought a 25g ball of Rowan Fine Nordic Tweed but it's a bit thicker so unless I can figure out the modifications to make the same size 'puffs that will be relegated to the drawer for now, which would be a shame as it's gorgeous! Oh and I'm knitting on 3.25mm DPNs which is a little smaller than in the pattern as I prefer the result.
Edit: Further to the comments of crocheters who don't knit, there is a crochet pattern for a filled hexagon called The Apiary Puff which is available as a free Ravelry download - enjoy :)

The intention is to have this as a handbag project as it's so easy to pick up at any time and each puff takes less than an hour (I think it's about 50 mins at the moment from start to finish) but at the moment I am too enamoured to think about casting on anything else. This may well become my One a Day project but I'm not quite sure yet.....
I have a feeling that a lot of my WIP Wednesday updates are going to be featuring this project.

This really looks like so much fun. It might need to sting here too.
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to hold back on making the same quilt, but I think I am going to cast on my first hexipuff today. I think it's adorable.xx
ReplyDeleteIf you weren't SO far away, I'd happily send along a bag full of purple-y yarn scraps that I've been collecting and never found a use for. Bummer! I can't wait to see your quilt come together, though! It's going to be gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis is a trend I think I can safely say I will pass on. Very cute, but I know I would not have the patience for it!! LOL. I am ADHD when it comes to crafting I guess.
ReplyDeletethank you for the lovely review of my bag...hexipuffs are so addictive, however, I'm on a bit of a crochet thing at the moment oh and moving house so not much time for anything really :)
ReplyDeletethese are gorgeous- I wish I could knit :)
ReplyDeleteThat blanket makes me wish I could knit, it's adorable. I completely understand why your kids want to "borrow" the puffs. :)
ReplyDeleteA bag to store a project is always a must!
ReplyDeleteLove that stripey yarn. Are you stuffing the hexis also?
Hi all, thanks for all your comments :D
ReplyDeleteI've added a link to the crochet version of a hexipuff to the post for those who don't knit.
@Kepanie - yes they are all stuffed before they are finished off although you can't see that so well in this picture but I'm sure there will be plenty more pictures to come in future posts :D
I love the bag :) and might have to have a go at these puffs everyone seems to be making
ReplyDeleteLooking great! And your bag is adorable!
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting on my blog post. The pattern I am working on was printed in a Lets Knit Supplement but it is also in this King Cole pattern book http://hejhog-uk.com/king-cole-crochet-book-p-7995.html. Unfortunately the pattern hasnt made it to Ravelry yet. Been meaning to ask you for ages - which part of Wales are your family in?
ReplyDeleteGorgeous hexipuff's - I so love that word!!! xxx
I love the hexipuffs ... I envision a huge pillow made of stitched together hexipuffs!
ReplyDeleteThe puffs look so like so much fun :D
ReplyDeletemy kids would steal them too!
ReplyDeletelooking fab! A great one a day project for sure, you are a legend!

The hexipuffs are lovely, but I don't reckon I'll ever do it (note how I left some scope to totally go back on my word!) far too much effort needed!
ReplyDeleteOhh this is going to be such a lovely quilt! Looking forward to seeing it grow, and thanks for the crochet linkage!
ReplyDeleteOh no, you too!!! I want to join in with the hexipuffs too (but I don't need a blanket...)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have an award for you over on my blog :)
Thanks so much for posting the crochet version of the hexes! Off to raid the sock yarn stash!
ReplyDeleteI think it's such a popular project as they are so cute and squishy. Will probably try a few hexipuffs myself at some point and see if I fancy making a whole blanket of them. Imagine how warm it would be! Can't believe you've put down your circulars! Hope DPNs are treating you well.
ReplyDeleteI am just loving these hexipuffs! I think I am going to have to give them a try, they look so fun! Love the bag too!
