Based on German folk tale Etwas von den Wurzelkindern published in 1906, this beautiful book was illustrated a century later by the acclaimed quilter Sieglinde Schoen Smith and tells the tale of Mother Earth waking her children up at the end of Winter to paint the ladybirds and dust off bumblebees. When all the preparations are complete, the children bloom into Spring.
They spend a joyful and carefree Summer in the meadows and woodland before the leaves fall from the trees and they know it's time to go back underground to Mother Earth to sleep again.
This is a visually beautiful book and a charming tale of the anthropomorphized Mother Earth and her Root Children which small children can relate to. (If I didn't have children, I may still have bought this book just to marvel at the beautiful details in the quilt. It's amazing to think that each and every bit was hand-stitched.)
