I had originally bought my Noro Korchoran with a particular pattern in mind but as there were only 2 skeins available in the colourway I wanted (#55) at the NSLYS (not-so local yarn shop) I decided I'd find another pattern for it. However I kept coming back to this and decided to start knitting it and see where it took me.
So a couple of nights ago, I started knitting Rosa's Caponcho by Emma Fassio using 6mm/100cm circular needles with the aim of using the Noro for the top of it and then another slightly 'different' yarn whose colours go really nicely with it for the bottom. Here is a close-up of the Noro which shows it well:

Here is the result of attempt #1 before I added the other mystery yarn. As I have a short neck I made the cowl 27 rows deep and then I just worked the main section until the yarn ran out. I decided to tentatively cast off at that point leaving the end tied off only loosely with a view to picking up stitches to join the other yarn or getting more of the Noro from somewhere else and carrying on with it.
Unfortunately the other yarn REALLY didn't work :-( I didn't even manage to get any pictures as it was so bad I ripped it straight back out. So after much deliberation, I decided to unravel it ALL and just knit it up on larger needles in the Noro. Here it is going straight back onto the yarn roller, something I unexpectedly found quite liberating.
It's a shame as I liked the very dense and cuddly texture on the smaller needles, but it's looking good so far and I hope it'll be long enough for me with just the 2 skeins. It's quite expensive yarn and I really don't want to start hunting around for it and then paying postal fees as well, so it does seem the right thing to do. Only one way to find out, I suppose. Watch this space....
I think I would have cried a little at having to rip back all that knitting.
ReplyDeleteI'm using DPN's for the socks - I'm sure Naomi likes to magic loop hers, which is another thing on my long list of things to learn!
I can already do magic loop for other things but never made an adult sock before. The heel looks a bit terrifying at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI actually found unravelling strangely satisfying, although I didn't expect to and had been deliberating for hours before I decided it was the thing to do.
don't be put off sock making because of the heel, Sair ... it's one of those things that once you try you'll be amazed at how easy it is xxx
